USS Sterett, San Diego – On September 26th, USS Sterett (DDG 104) hosted a wardroom luncheon and an all hands call with two veterans with combat naval xperience.
Mr. Doug Sjoberg, a former Navy Lieutenant and Mr. Stuart Hedley, a retired EMC and Pearl Harbor survivor visited with the officers and crew of Sterett and shared their combat experiences. Their visit provided a valuable opportunity for Sterett Sailors to hear firsthand accounts of naval history.
Mr. Sjoberg, who originally contacted the ship in August, served in Viet Nam and provided gunfire support to the troops on the ground while serving aboard USS Bradley (FF 1041) from 1970-1971. EMC (Ret.) Stuart Hedley was serving aboard USS West Virgina (BB 48) during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and later went on to serve on USS San Francisco (CA 38) and fought alongside USS Sterett (DD 407) during the Solomon Islands Campaign in 1942. After retiring from the Navy in 1960, Mr. Hedley became involved with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was named the Pearl Harbor Association Veteran of the Year for 2005.
“As the number of Pearl Harbor survivors is decreasing each year, it is important for us to share our experiences with as many people as possible,” said Hedley.
“It was an honor to have Mr. Sjoberg and Mr. Hedley aboard Sterett to share their experiences with the officers and crew. It is a rare experience for our Sailors to hear firsthand accounts of naval combat. It was also impressive to hear Mr. Hedley’s stories of serving alongside DD 407 during the Solomon Islands Campaign,” said Cmdr. Stewart Bateshansky, Sterett’s Commanding Officer.
USS Sterett is part of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 and is homeported in San Diego, California. DESRON 9 also includes USS Shoup (DDG 86), USS Momsen (DDG 92), USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60), USS Ford (FFG 54), USS Ingraham (FFG 61), and USS Preble (DDG 88). Sterett returned from her second deployment to the 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AORs) in July 2012.
