USS STERETT, At Sea - Commander, Naval Surface Forces announced guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104) is the winner of the 2011 Battle Effectiveness (Battle "E") Award for Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9, Feb. 27.
This is the second consecutive year Sterett has been awarded the Battle "E." The Battle "E" is awarded annually to surface ships meeting high standards of excellence in all mission areas and recognizes superior operational performance across all warfare areas over the course of the calendar year. Sterett was one of just ten surface ships to win the Battle "E" for exceptional performance during both 2010 and 2011.
"The Battle 'E' demonstrates exceptional performance, and each surface ship award winner has shown success in meeting mission area standards," said Vice Adm. Richard Hunt, commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
In addition to winning the Battle Effectiveness Award, Sterett also earned Command Excellence Awards in all warfare areas for the third consecutive year. Command Excellence Awards recognize superior performance in maritime warfare; engineering and survivability; command, control, communications and information warfare; logistics management; and ship safety. Sterett has won Command Excellence Awards in all warfare areas every year since her commissioning in 2008.
"I am fortunate to command a ship with such a stellar culture and legacy of excellence," said Cmdr. Rich McDaniel, Sterett's commanding officer. "It is an impressive accomplishment for Sterett to win the Battle 'E' two years in a row. Equally as impressive is the fact that Sterett has won Command Excellence Awards in all warfare areas for every year she has been eligible."
In April 2011, Sterett returned from its maiden deployment. The crew immediately began a training cycle to prepare for her second deployment, which began seven months later, this past December.
"2011 was an extremely demanding year for our Sailors and they rose to the challenge and exceeded all expectations. Winning the Battle 'E' is a testament to the hard work and outstanding performance of each and every Sterett Sailor," said McDaniel.
Sterett is deployed as part of DESRON 9, embarked on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9. CSG 9 also includes guided-missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG 92), guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71) and embarked Carrier Air Wing 2. CSG 9 is deployed to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts, and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
