Commander Bateshansky graduated from The University of Oklahoma with B.A. in Political Science and was commissioned through the NROTC program in December, 1994.

Sea duty tours include an initial assignment to USS ANTIETAM (CG 54) where he served as First Lieutenant, ASW Officer and M-Division Officer from 1995-1997 followed by a assignment as Main Propulsion Assistant on USS JUNEAU (LPD 10) from 1997-1999. As a Department Head, he served as Weapons Officer, Combat Systems Officer, and Operations Officer on USS MILIUS (DDG 69) from 2002-2005. His most recent sea assignment was as Executive Officer of USS SAMPSON (DDG 102) from 2008-2010.

Ashore, Commander Bateshansky attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning an M.S. in Systems Engineering and his Command and Staff diploma from the Naval War College. Following his Department Head tours, he served briefly as a maritime warfare instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS), before being ordered to Iraq as an Individual Augmentee. He spent 11.5 months in the city of Mosul, serving as the Operations Officer (S-3) for the Army’s 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion. His most recent assignment was as the Joint / Strike Group Exercise Planner on the staff of the Commander, U.S. Third Fleet.

Commander Bateshansky has proudly served with an abundance of outstanding Sailors, and has watched several of them rise through the ranks. He is a trusty Golden Shellback and holds a variety of personal, unit and campaign awards. He assumed command of USS STERETT (DDG 104) in July 31, 2012.
