KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Sailors onboard Guided Missile Destroyer USS SAMPSON (DDG 102) took part in a Community Relations (COMREL) project at the Agathians Shelter Children’s Home. Community Relations is a term used for building relationships between the United States and the various communities of the cities and countries visited.
Sailors from SAMPSON visited the home for approximately three hours. Each Sailor from SAMPSON donated their off-duty time to the shelter which is home to over 42 orphans or wards of the state. Sailors assisted in the beautification of the grounds by cleaning and landscaping. The sailors then took time to play rugby and soccer with the children. CTT1(SW/AW) James Mitchell, Sailor onboard USS SAMPSON participated in the COMREL. After the event he stated, “It was an honor to be given the chance to influence the lives of nearly 20 children, ranging in age from 4-14. I was humbled by the experience and learned to appreciate some of the luxuries we have in our lives that others never get.”
