Commander Michael Mortensen
Commanding Officer

Commander Mortensen was raised in Murdock, Nebraska, and graduated from Elmwood-Murdock High School in 1996. He attended United States Naval Academy earning a B.S. degree in Systems Engineering and his commission as an Ensign in May, 2000.

Upon completing Division Officer Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) in Newport, R.I., he reported to USS PATRIOT (MCM 7) in January 2001 serving as Communications Officer, Combat Information Center Officer and Operations Officer while completing two deployments and numerous international exercises. CDR Mortensen attended Nuclear Power School and prototype at NPTU Ballston Spa then from October 2003 to January 2006, he served as RP05 Division Officer aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), completing a 7th Fleet deployment and a 12 month Dry-docking Planned Increment Availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS).

In 2007, CDR Mortensen’s earned a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering and completed his Phase I Joint Professional Military Education at Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA.

After attending SWOS for Department Head, CDR Mortensen was assigned as Operations Officer on USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101) from June 2008 to January 2010. As Operations Officer, he completed two deployments to 5th Fleet and was temporarily assigned to Destroyer Squadron Seven to assist in 5th Fleet exercise planning and operational plan development.

From January 2010 until January 2012, CDR Mortensen served aboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) as the CHEM/RADCON Assistant completing a 27 month Dry-docking Planned Increment Availability and a 5th Fleet deployment.

Returning to shore, CDR Mortensen took charge as CNAP detachment PSNS Officer in Charge, serving as Type Commander representative for three aircraft carrier dry dock availabilities.

From June 2014 until December 2015, CDR Mortensen served as Executive Officer on USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) completing a 5th Fleet deployment and screening for Commander Command Afloat. After BUNKER HILL, he was detailed to Naval Surface & Mine Warfare Development Command staff while awaiting Commander Command tour. In June of 2016, CDR Mortensen was ordered to fill a gapped Executive Officer billet aboard USS GRIDLEY and fleeted up to Commanding Officer in January 2016.

CDR Mortensen’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), the Battle E (4) and other various unit and campaign awards.
