SOY Finalist (Shore) - STG1(SW) Chad Gepfrey
​Native of Troy, Ohio, on July 21, 1983, he attended Sidney High School and graduated in 2001. After attending Edison State Community College for two years, he joined the United States Navy in 2004 and became the first generation of his family to serve in the military.

After completing Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Sonar Technician “A” School and AN/SQQ-89(V) 4/6/10 Operator course in San Diego, California, graduating near the top of his class. Upon completion of training, he reported aboard the USS Winston S. Churchill DDG-81, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. He quickly qualifyed in multiple advanced watch stations. His efforts and determination resulted in his advancement to the rank of Third Class Petty Officer and being awarded his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Qualification pin. Completing two deployments with the ship, he was promoted to Second Class Petty Officer before transferring in 2009.

He then reported to Navy Recruiting District Phoenix after completing his Enlisted Navy Recruiting Orientation in Pensacola, Florida. He was assigned to Navy Recruiting Station Bell Canyon where he served as Recruiter in Charge of one of the largest stations in his Command. He was promoted to Petty Officer First Class in 2011.

In 2013, while completing the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 Journeyman pipeline in San Diego, California, he was hand-selected for duty onboard PCU Zumwalt, located in Bath, Maine. While onboard he served in the positions of Sonar Division LPO, and leading Antiterrorism Training Supervisor.

Petty Officer Gepfrey’s decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (7); Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (3); National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
