A native of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, CAPT Sakaguchi graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
His at sea assignments include Gunnery Officer, Damage Control Assistant, and Main Propulsion Assistant in USS CARON (DD 970); Assistant Material Officer, Commander Destroyer Squadron Ten; commissioning Chief Engineer in USS STOUT (DDG 55); Executive Officer in USS VICKSBURG (CG 69); Commanding Officer of U.S. Naval Vessel SWIFT (HSV 2) Gold Crew, and Executive Officer, USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7). CAPT Sakaguchi reported to COMPHIRON THREE in 2010 as Deputy Commander.
In addition to various Surface Warfare Officer Training, CAPT Sakaguchi attended the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Quantico, Virginia to complete Phase One Joint Professional Military Education. While attending the Command and Staff College, he also earned a Masters Degree in Military Studies.
CAPT Sakaguchi’s shore assignments include joint duty at U.S. Southern Command, Miami, Florida. During this tour of duty, he served as a Naval Current Operations Officer and Counter-narcotics Operations Officer. Other shore assignments include assignment to the OPNAV staff as the Deputy Branch Head for Surface Warfare (N76) Programs and Budgets and Chief of Staff for Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center at the Washington Navy Yard.
CAPT Sakaguchi’s personal awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) and various campaign, expeditionary and unit awards.
