CAPT Malcolm H. Potts
Deputy Commander
Originally from Virginia, CAPT Potts graduated from Old Dominion University in December 1989 and was commissioned through NROTC. Following Naval Aviation Flight training and designation as a helicopter pilot, he received initial training in the MH-53E.

CAPT Potts' sea duty assignments include an initial tour with Helicopter Mine Countermeasure Squadron Fourteen (HM-14) and a ship’s company tour with USS SAIPAN (LHA-2) deploying to the Mediterranean and Adriatic with the 22nd and 26th Marine Expeditionary Units. As a Department Head with HM-14, he deployed as an OIC in the Fifth Fleet AOR and served as the Safety and Operations Officer.

He served as Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer of HM-14. During this tour HM-14 maintained a forward deployed detachment to Pohang, South Korea and conducted two major disaster relief operations following the earthquake in Haiti and a major typhoon in southern Taiwan.

CAPT Potts most recently served as Navigator aboard the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69).

His shore assignments include instructor duty with Helicopter Training Squadron Eight (HT-8) where he earned Instructor of the Year for FY 1997 and served as the Operations Officer. He was also assigned to COMHELSEACOMBATWINGLANT as the Operations Officer and U.S. Joint Forces Command assisting in the establishment of US Africa Command, serving as a military planner assigned to the U.S. Department of State and conducting Interagency/Multinational CTF concept development.

CAPT Potts attended the inaugural class of National Defense University’s Joint Advance Warfighting School. Upon graduation, he was awarded a MS in Joint Strategic Campaign Planning and his Joint Professional Military Education Phase I and II. Additionally, he earned a Masters in Business Management from Troy University. CAPT Potts is a Joint Qualified Officer, Joint Strategic Planner, and a qualified Command Duty Officer Underway and has over 3600 flight hours.
