Captain J. Curtis Shaub was relieved by Captain Martin Pompeo as Commander, Amphibious Squadron ONE (CPR-1), in a change of command ceremony held on Naval Air Station, North Island, on 02 February 2012.
CAPT Shaub commanded Amphibious Squadron ONE and BOXER Amphibious Readiness Group throughout a Western Pacific and Middle Eastern deployment from February 2011 through September 2011. BOXER Amphibious Readiness Group consisted of: USS BOXER (LHD 4); USS GREEN BAY (LPD 20); USS COMSTOCK (LSD-45); 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and elements of Fleet Surgical Team Three; Tactical Air Control Squadron 11; Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, Assault Craft Unit One, Assault Craft Unit Five, and Beach Master Unit One. With over 4,400 Sailors and Marines, BOXARG aggressively conducted operations across multiple areas of responsibility, routinely supporting simultaneous Joint tactical missions, in addition to conducting Theater Security Cooperation (TSC) and Maritime Security Operation missions in support of Global Maritime Safety and Security Initiatives. They provided theater support capabilities using landing craft air cushion and landing craft (LCAC) utility vehicles, CH-46, CH-53, AH-1, UH-1 and SH-60 helicopters and AV-8B Harrier jet aircraft.
Captain Shaub assumed command of Amphibious Squadron ONE in August 2010. His next tour will be at COMNAVAIRPAC, CA, North Island as Aviation Safety Director.
Captain Pompeo, a Surface Warfare Officer, completed nine deployments on seven ships: USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY (LST 1197); USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71); USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50); USS SAIPAN (LHA 2); Executive Officer of USS SHREVEPORT (LPD 12); Commanding Officer of USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43); Deputy of AMPHIBIOUS SQUADRON ONE embarked aboard USS BOXER (LHD-4).
CAPT Pompeo reported as the Deputy Commander of Amphibious Squadron One in August 2010. Prior to assuming Command of Amphibious Squadron ONE, he was the Executive Officer of the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI.
