MCMRON Seven Grows Mustaches for Charity

Mine Countermeasures Squadron Seven Grows Mustaches for Charity

SASEBO, Japan – Sailors of Mine Countermeasures Squadron SEVEN (MCMRON 7) sprouted mustaches this November in an effort to increase awareness about men’s health issues and raise funds for charity. 

After a month of growing their mustaches, MCMRON 7 staff members participated in Sasebo’s 1st Annual Mustache Dash 5K at Nimitz Park, organized by Sasebo’s Chief Petty Officers Association.  All proceeds went towards prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. 

A combination of the words mustache and November, “Movember” is a global movement that is literally “changing the face of men’s health” by using mustaches to start a conversation about serious health issues. 

“My father died last year of cancer.  I’ve had other family members also taken by cancer.  This year’s awareness campaign was a good start, but we can always do more.  It’s all about getting the word out,” said Chief Damage Controlman Christopher Haws, who led the effort at MCMRON 7 to recruit participants for “Movember.”  

According to the Movember website, 1 in 2 men will get cancer in their lifetime, with 1 in 6 men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Studies have shown that men tend not to have regular health checks because many are embarrassed to speak openly about their health issues. 

The Movember movement is designed to spread the message that most cancers are highly curable, if caught early enough.  The goal is to help men feel comfortable with openly discussing their health concerns and increase the likelihood in detecting, diagnosing, and treating cancer.  

When asked about his month-old mustache, Mineman 1st Class Michael Adkins said, “It was a great opportunity to get the whole command together to support a good cause.”  

MCMRON 7, commanded by Capt. Mark Truluck, is a combined readiness and tactical staff responsible for mine countermeasures in the SEVENTH Fleet area of responsibility.  The squadron consists of four Avenger class minesweepers forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan and a helicopter mine countermeasures detachment in Pohang, South Korea.
