Executive Officer (March 2012 - March 2013)

Commander Villarreal is a native of San Antonio, Texas and a 1991 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering. He received a Master of Public Administration degree from Troy State University, Troy, Alabama (1998) and a Master of Business Administration from Webster University (2010). A graduate of the U. S. Army Command and General Staff College, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he earned a Master of Military Art and Science degree, and designation as an Army Strategist (2005).

Commander Villarreal’s operational assignments began on USS GUADALCANAL (LPH-7) in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1992-1994, where he served in both the Deck and Engineering Departments. Following that assignment, he was the Electrical and then Fire Control Officer on USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD (DD 968) in Norfolk, Virginia (1994-1996). He was pre-commissioning Weapons Officer on USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) in Bath, Maine and Norfolk, Virginia (1998-2001), and Operations Officer on USS ESTOCIN (FFG 15), also in Norfolk, Virginia (2001-2002). Additionally, he served as Executive Officer on USS OSPREY (MHC-51) in Ingleside, Texas (2002-2004), Damage Control Assistant (DCA) on USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) in Norfolk, VA (2005-2007) and Operations Officer on USS NASSAU (LHA 4) in Norfolk (2007-2009). He is currently serving as the Chief Staff Officer (CSO) at Mine Countermeasures Squadron SEVEN in Sasebo, Japan.

Ashore Commander Villarreal has served at the former Combat Systems Training Group (CSTG), Afloat Training Group (ATG), Norfolk, as Surface Warfare (SUW) Department Head and Training Liaison Officer (TLO) for ships in the Basic Phase of the Interdeployment Training Cycle. Additionally, as a Tomahawk Missile subject matter expert, he trained and conducted numerous Cruise Missile Tactical Qualifications (CMTQ) onboard Atlantic Fleet ships. His most recent assignment was the Deputy Director, Navy Element at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was recently selected into the Navy’s Specialty Career Path program, specializing in Mine Warfare.

Commander Villarreal’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
