Commanding Officer (June 2016 - October 2017)
Captain Miller is a native of Olathe, Kansas. He enlisted in the Navy September 16, 1984 and attended Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. Captain Miller then attended ET ‘A’ school followed by Nuclear Power School and the A1W Nuclear Power Prototype Training Unit where he qualified as Instructor Reactor Operator and Shutdown Reactor Operator. He was then accepted to the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering in May of 1993 from the University of Kansas.
Captain Miller’s first operational tour was with the “Swamp Foxes” of HSL-44. He initially deployed in support of Unitas in USS Dewert (FFG-45). Upon return, Captain Miller deployed in USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) assigned to the Enterprise Battle Group. During his deployment he supported Operation Desert Fox and United Nations efforts in Kosovo. While assigned to HSL-44, Captain Miller served in various capacities as Detachment Administration & Training Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer and Squadron Quality Assurance Officer.
Captain Miller’s next assignment was with the Fleet Replacement Squadron “Airwolves” of HSL-40. During this tour Captain Miller served as the First Lieutenant Officer, Line Division Officer, Quality Assurance Officer and Maintenance Officer.
Captain Miller then served as the Helicopter Element Coordinator and LAMPS Element Coordinator for Commander Carrier Group EIGHT and Carrier Air Wing SEVEN while embarked in USS George Washington in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. While assigned to Commander Carrier Group EIGHT, Captain Miller qualified as Staff Watch Officer.
In October of 2004, Captain Miller reported to the “Grandmasters” of HSL-46 for his Officer in Charge/Department Head tour. As Officer in Charge, Detachment 6, Captain Miller deployed to the Western Caribbean and Eastern Pacific in support of Counter Narco-Terrorism operations while embarked in USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG-49). Captain Miller served as the Squadron Safety Officer and Maintenance Officer.
In February 2007, Captain Miller reported to the Naval War College earning a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Upon completion of his tour in Rhode Island, he reported to United States Strategic Command Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Captain Miller qualified as Operations Watch Officer and Integrate Missile Defense Watch Commander. In addition he was assigned as the J37 Branch Head for Training, Readiness, Exercise and Test Development.
Captain Miller reported as the Executive Officer of the world famous HSM-74 Swamp Foxes, Naval Air Station Jacksonville June 2011 and took over as Commanding Officer in September of 2012 and deployed with the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN Strike Group as part of CARRIER AIR WING THREE to the C5F AOR. Captain Miller served as the Naval Integrated Fires Branch Head at OPNAV N2/N6 F33. He is preparing to assume command of Mine Counter Measure Squadron SEVEN located at Sasebo, Japan in June 2016.
Captain Miller’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards. He has logged over 2800 hours and several hundred small deck landings.
