Command Master Chief Greg S. Carlson, a native of Grand Haven, Michigan, enlisted in the Navy in August 1993. Following completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Operations Specialist “A” School, in Dam Neck, Virginia.

Carlson’s early assignments include tours aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68), NAVAL MOBILE CONSTRUCTION BATTALION TWENTY FOUR/TWENTY SIX, USS COLE (DDG 67), and USS LEYTE GULF (CG 65). He also served as the course LCPO for Anti-Submarine Tactical Air Controller, Anti-Submarine Warfare Evaluator at the Center for Surface Combat Systems, and as the Operations Department LCPO aboard USS MAHAN (DDG 72) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65). In March 2011, he was selected for the Command Master Chief program.

Carlson’s Command Master Chief tours include Air Test Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9), USS NORMANDY (CG 60), USS WASP (LHD 1), and currently serves as Command Master Chief Commander Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), and various unit and campaign awards. In addition, he is the recipient of the MCPON Delbert D. Black Leadership Award, the Surface Navy Association Admiral Zumwalt Visionary Leadership Award, the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award, and the Naval Academy Class of 1972 Leadership Award.
