A native New Yorker, Captain Weilenman graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and was commissioned an Ensign on 25 May 1988.
Following commissioning, he attended the Surface Warfare Officer Division Officer Course in Newport, Rhode Island and subsequently reported to USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56) where he served as Assistant Navigator, Assistant CIC Officer, and Auxiliaries Officer from July 1989 to July 1992. His second division officer tour was in USS KALAMAZOO (AOR 6) as Damage Control Assistant from December 1992 to May 1994.
Immediately following completion of his division officer tours, Captain Weilenman commenced Department Head training in June 1994. He then reported to USS FLATLEY (FFG 21) and served as Combat Systems Officer from January 1995 to May 1996. His second Department Head tour was as Combat Systems Officer in USS TICONDEROGA (CG 47) from September 1996 to June 1998. Following these assignments, Captain Weilenman reported to Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO/GEORGE WASHINGTON Battle Group staff, serving as ACOS Admin (N1) and Flag Secretary from July 1998 to July 2000. He served as Executive Officer in USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55) from December 2001 to March 2003 and commanded USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) from October 2006 to April 2008, deploying with the HARRY S. TRUMAN Strike Group from November 2007 to April 2008. This deployment was the first operational employment of the SCAN EAGLE UAV from a DDG. The ship was also awarded the Battle E for calendar year 2007. Most recently, Captain Weilenman served as Commanding Officer, USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) from March 2011 to October 2014, deploying to the Arabian Gulf and operating with two Carrier Strike Groups. PORT ROYAL provided support during the waning days of Operation NEW DAWN and Captain Weilenman was the last U.S. commander to serve as Commander, Task Group Iraqi Maritime, coordinating maritime infrastructure protection for the Al Basrah Oil Terminal (ABOT) and Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal (KAAOT) as that mission was transferred to Iraqi Navy responsibility. The ship also earned the Battle E for calendar years 2011 and 2012. Captain Weilenman has participated in seven overseas deployments, including Operations DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM, ENDURING FREEDOM and several Counter-Drug operations.
Ashore, Captain Weilenman attended the Naval War College from August 2000 to June 2001, earning a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. From April 2003 to April 2006, he served on the OPNAV staff within the Surface Warfare Directorate (N86) as the Current Ships Section Head and the DDG new construction and CG/DDG Modernization action officer. Following his command tour in OSCAR AUSTIN, Captain Weilenman served as the Combating Terrorism Branch Chief within Plans Division, Strategy, Plans, and Programs Directorate, at U.S. Africa Command from July 2008 to May 2010.
Captain Weilenman’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star in lieu of second award), the Navy Commendation Medal (Gold Star in lieu of Fifth Award), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service medals.
