Command Master Chief


Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Dexter Watson joined the Navy October 4, 1990.  In December 1990, he completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida, meritoriously advanced to E-2, and received orders to Quartermaster “A” School in Orlando, Florida.  His early tours as a Quartermaster included USS SAVANNAH (AOR4), Norfolk, Virginia, USS CARL-VINSON (CVN 70), Alameda, California, and Commander Naval Air Forces, Norfolk, Virginia.  

Aboard the USS DEYO (DD 989) he was the NN01 Leading Petty Officer.  Highlighted by a successful cruise in 1998, DEYO was the first American ship to serve as the flagship for Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean (SNFM) which earned her the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation award.  Petty Officer Watson earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) qualification.  He was selected as DEYO’s 2000 Sailor of the Year, deployed for a second six month deployment in December 2000, and was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 2001.  In 2002,  Chief Watson served as an Afloat Navigation Instructor for Afloat Training Group Atlantic completing his Master Training Specialist and Afloat Training Specialist qualification before returning to sea duty in 2005. 

Chief Watson reported aboard USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) in Yokosuka, Japan to serve as NAVADM Leading Chief Petty Officer and advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer.  In 2006, the crew conducted a hull swap as USS SHILOH (CG 67) relieved the CHANCELLORSVILLE as a forward deployed naval unit in Yokosuka, Japan.  After serving a highly successful tour on both units, Senior Chief Watson transferred to USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), Everett, Washington.  Aboard the ABRAHAM LINCOLN, he served as the Navigation Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and Command Senior Enlisted Section Leader.  In March of 2008, the ship deployed for a seven month Western Pacific – Indian Ocean – Persian Gulf deployment.  He earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist qualification while deployed and after deployment, Senior Chief Watson was awarded the ABRAHAM LINCOLN “Union” Leadership Award from a pool of over 200 Chief Petty Officers.  In May 2009, he transferred to Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (NMAWC), San Diego, California to serve as N31 Current Operations Department LCPO.  He was later appointed as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader, selected for the Command Senior Chief program, and advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer.

Master Chief Watson was selected as a Command Master Chief in 2012.  He is a Graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 126 “Green”) in 2006, Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course in 2012, and earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Trident University. His personal awards include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards), Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), and various campaign and service ribbons.
