Captain Mike Doran is a native of Harrisonville, Missouri and grew up in various locations including Virginia, South Carolina and India. He was commissioned through the NROTC program at Villanova University in May 1989.
Afloat, CAPT Doran has deployed to the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Pacific in support of numerous joint and combined operations including DESERT STORM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and ENDURING FREEDOM. He served in command at sea as the first Commanding Officer of USS FREEDOM (LCS 1) Gold Crew. Other sea tours include Executive Officer of USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64); Weapons Officer and Combat System Officer aboard USS McFAUL (DDG 74); Flag Aide to the Commander, CRUISER DESTROYER GROUP TWO/USS GEORGE WASHINGTON STRIKE GROUP; and First Lieutenant, Auxiliaries Officer, and Combat Information Officer in USS CARR (FFG 52).
Ashore, Captain Doran most recently served at US Pacific Command, first as the Deputy for Theater Operations Integration Division (J39) and then as the Special Assistant for Legislative Affairs. Other shore tours include Surface Warfare Programs Officer at the Office of Legislative Affairs and Flag Aide to Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
Captain Doran holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Villanova University and a Masters of Arts degree in National Security Affairs with a concentration in Middle East Area Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Crews with whom he has served have earned 13 unit and campaign awards including 3 “Battle E” awards for operational excellence. Captain Doran’s personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy Achievement Medal.
