- The commanding officer of guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71) visited British Royal Navy destroyer HMS Daring (D32), March 20.
Capt. Don Gabrielson visited Daring to tour the new ship and strengthen coalition partnerships by conducting a personnel exchange between Cape St. George, Daring and aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
This marked the second time this year the three ships have conducted personnel engagements in an effort to better understand the capabilities of each platform.
“[Daring is] a fantastic platform, and brings a significant capability to enhance our missions here in the Arabian Gulf,” said Gabrielson.
Daring, commissioned July 23, 2009, is the Royal Navy’s first fully-integrated, all-electric propulsion, front-line warship.
“Daring is here on her first deployment, and the ship’s crew is learning how to integrate with coalition operations,” said Gabrielson. “As the air defense commander at sea, I witnessed its development firsthand.”
Daring’s primary role is to protect British and international allied forces from aircraft and missiles through the use of the latest air defense technology, including the Sampson multi-function radar and the Sea Viper missile system.
“It was exciting to see the Royal Navy modernizing their fleet with the latest systems and automation to assist the watchstanders and crew in a demanding tactical environment,” said Gabrielson.
The ship has a crew of 234 and can accommodate up to 700 people.
“I’ve enjoyed working with Daring and her crew,” said Gabrielson. “I look forward to watching them continually raise the bar in future operations and endeavors.”
Cape St. George is currently deployed as part of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9 which also includes aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 ships, guided-missile destroyers USS Momsen (DDG 92) and USS Sterett (DDG 104). CSG 9 is operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
