Command Master Chief

Master Chief Johnson hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1986. Shortly thereafter he entered Basic Training at Recruit Training Center San Diego, California and followed with Fireman Apprentice Training. His initial assignment brought him to Torpedo Weapons Retriever Three (TWR-3) Naval SUBASE Port Services, San Diego, in support of naval submarine exercises.

In May of 2012 Master Chief Johnson reported to LAKE ERIE having previously served as commissioning Command Master Chief, Littoral Combat Ship INDEPENDENCE (LCS-2). In this capacity, he brought to life the first of class warship leveraging the minimal man concept.

Command Master Chief Johnson’s other sea tours include Seal Team One; USS REUBEN JAMES (FFG-57); and USS PAUL HAMILTON (DDG-60). Onboard PAUL HAMILTON he was selected and promoted to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.

His ashore tours include Naval Station Pearl Harbor, USS ARIZONA Memorial, Naval Station Pearl Harbor Engine shop and Recruit Training Command (RTC). At RTC he served as a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) and trained nine companies of Sailors and achieved his Master Training Specialist qualification. During this time, he was promoted to and joined the ranks of Chief Petty Officer.

In January 2008, he was selected into the Command Senior Chief program. From July through September 2008, he attended the Naval Senior Enlisted Academy, Command Master Chief course followed by Surface Warfare Officer School attending Littoral Combat ship High Speed Officer of the Deck School in Newport, Rhode Island. He then reported to USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) Gold Crew and assumed responsibility as Command Senior Chief ; Career Counselor; Material, Maintenance Manager; Ship’s Maintenance Officer; Administrative Officer; and Education Service Officer. During this tour of duty he qualified as underway Officer of the Deck and Engineering Officer of the Watch – third qualification following REUBEN JAMES and PAUL HAMILTON. In May 2011 Senior Chief Johnson was promoted to the rank of Master Chief and converted to the rate of Command Master Chief.

Master Chief Johnson’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps. Commendation Medal, the Navy & Marine Corps. Achievement Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal .
