CMDCM(SW) Brian Ortega
Command Master Chief (September 2009 - February 2013)

Master Chief Ortega is a native of Norwalk, California and he is a Norwalk High School graduate. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1987 and his first duty assignment was onboard the USS Rathburne (FF 1057) and other assignments have included Fleet Training Group Pearl Harbor, USS Fletcher (DD 992), Commander Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, USS Port Royal (CG 73) and Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific. He has served on the National Board of Directors for the Surface Navy Association and Board Member for the USS Missouri Chief Petty Officer Legacy Academy. He reported to the USS Lake Erie (CG 70) as the Command Master Chief in September 2009.
Master Chief Ortega has completed seven deployments to the 5th Fleet and 7th Fleet AORs in support of national tasking. He served as Leading Chief Petty Officer onboard USS Fletcher (DD 992) in which he supported "OPERATION Desert Fox" and United Nations sanctions against Iraq.
Onboard USS Port Royal (CG 73) he served as Operations Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and acting Command Master Chief, which included two deployments in support of "OPERATION Iraqi Freedom" and "OPERATION Enduring Freedom"; and the awarding of four Battle "E" Awards, the Spokane Trophy and numerous other unit citations and awards.
Master Chief Ortega is a graduate of the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 102 and has earned an Associates Degree from Hawaii Pacific University. He is entitled to wear the Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy Achievement Medal (six awards), Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal and both Global War on Terrorism Medals, Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, numerous campaign and unit awards and the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Pin.
