CDR Andrew P. Rivas, a native of Bay City, Texas, received his commission and graduated from Texas A&M University in May 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Distribution. He holds a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School and completed Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I in September 2009.
Sea tours include Ordnance Officer and Force Protection Officer in USS BULKELEY (DDG 84) and Main Propulsion Assistant in USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55). He made two deployments to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. CDR Rivas served as Engineer Officer in USS COLE (DDG 67) and deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in support of Sixth Fleet Ballistic Missile Defense tasking.
Ashore, CDR Rivas served as an engineering assessor at Engineering Assessments Atlantic conducting certification and assessment inspections for Atlantic Fleet Surface Ships’ conventional engineering plants. Most recently he served as Deputy Director for Executive and Fleet Support at Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (AB) Program Office in Dahlgren, VA.
CDR Rivas’ awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
