Captain Patrick Kelly, originally from Bound Brook, NJ, received his commission upon graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering. He as also earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from The George Washington University and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
His sea duty assignments include tours as Damage Control Assistant and Navigator in USS HAYLER (DD 997), Operations Officer in USS BENFOLD (DDG 65), Commanding Officer in USS HURRICANE (PC 3), Executive Officer in USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) and Commanding Officer in USS MOMSEN (DDG 92). MOMSEN deployed to Southeast Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Philippines. Most recently, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (N3) for Carrier Strike Group ONE completing a deployment to C5F in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
Ashore, CAPT Kelly served as an instructor and course coordinator in the Seamanship and Navigation Department at the U.S. Naval Academy, and as an Air Defense and Surface Warfare instructor at Tactical Training Group, Atlantic where he assisted in the training and certification of 7 Carrier and Expeditionary Strike Groups. He completed the requirements for Joint Qualified Officer while assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Pacific Command as Division Chief, Southeast Asian Policy and Director, Transnational Threats Strategic Focus Group.
CAPT Kelly’s personal awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal and various other campaign and service medals and ribbons.
