Congratulations on your orders to USS COWPENS (CG 63) and welcome onboard as a crewmember of the “Thundering Herd”. You are about to embark on an exciting tour of duty based in your new homeport, beautiful San Diego, CA. The ship has a proud heritage dating back to our namesake battle in the revolutionary war near Cowpens, South Carolina. We possess significant capabilities in all warfare areas. The AEGIS combat system is well known for its support to Air Defense and our strike capability is centered on the Tomahawk weapons system.

As the Command Master Chief, please allow me to assist you in ensuring a successful transition to your new home in San Diego. If you’ve received your orders, it is our focus to ensure your sponsor is assigned and contacts you as soon as possible. If you have not been contacted by your sponsor email me at Additionally, you will receive a Naval Message from the command with some important information concerning overseas screening. As your Command Master Chief, my conviction is to make certain that you and your family are well taken care of. Proactive engagement on your part with your sponsor and our Ombudsman (, can solve many issues and concerns before you arrive onboard, thus paving the way for a smooth transition. In addition, I’ve provided some information/links on our Family page which might be helpful.

Once you report, we will ensure you receive an effective indoctrination, assignment of a mentor and the opportunity to immediately apply your specific skill sets to USS COWPENS. In the event the ship is out of homeport when you arrive, please check in with PSD and TPU San Diego. Welcome aboard!!! We can’t wait to have you as a member of the “Thundering Herd”.

What is the uniform of the day for USS COWPENS?
Uniform of the day is coveralls and utilities, but there will be times when you need your blue and/or white uniform items depending on the season. All are required to maintain a full sea bag.

What uniform should I wear while PCS’ing?
While it was once common in the past for personnel to transit/PCS in uniform, this is no longer a good practice. When traveling on military orders you should always wear conservative civilian attire. You will need your uniforms to check in.
