USS COWPENS, At Sea -The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) was awarded the Personal Excellence Partnership Flagship Award for Community Service Nov. 15.
The award was announced by Vice Adm. J. M. Bird, Director of Navy Staff and recognizes outstanding community service projects every year in five different categories. The categories are personal excellence partnership; health, safety and fitness; project good neighbor; campaign drug free and environmental stewardship. They are presented to sea, shore and overseas commands.
“From personal experience, I've seen the selflessness that your Sailors have ashore as ambassadors and citizens,” said Rear Adm. J. R. Haley, commander, Task Force 70. “To be able to do this while excelling at the many operational taskings we have is phenomenal.”
“This was an awesome job done by all of Cowpens’ Sailors,” said Capt. Rob Marin, Cowpens’ commanding officer. “As the Strike Group Air Defense Cruiser at sea and as a forward deployed Naval force (FDNF) asset, these Sailors are dedicated to accomplishing the Navy’s mission. In addition to this, they continue to be model citizens in the local community and that is a remarkable accomplishment,” he added. “I'm very proud to be serving with each and every one of them.”
Cowpens is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and is underway in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility conducting routine maritime operations.
