Cowpens Sailors Spread Holiday Cheer at Local Orphanage
YOKOSUKA, Japan - Sailors from the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) visited children at the Misono Orphanage in Yokosuka, Japan during a community service project Dec. 17.

“Visiting the orphanage was a heartwarming experience,” said Quartermaster 3rd Class James Viernes. “I am glad that I was able to somehow have the chance to share Christmas with children less fortunate than myself.”

The 25 volunteers from Cowpens included Sailors and their family members who played with the children and helped distribute Christmas gifts provided by several different commands. Even Santa Claus made an appearance and handed out presents to each child ranging from three to 19 years old.

“The children could not wait to see what was inside their gifts,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Maria Velo. “I was glad to be a part of making the children happy, especially during this holiday season.”

Sailors and children spent several hours putting together new toys and racing them around the room. At the end of the visit, the children were smiling and thanked Sailors with paper Christmas ornaments.

“It was a rewarding experience for me and I hope we were able to give them a memorable Christmas experience,” said Lt.j.g. Johnny Jacobson. “I am glad we were able to participate in such a meaningful event and I look forward to attending next year.”

Cowpens is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan and is part of the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group.
