CAPT Gregory W. Gombert
Commanding Officer

A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Captain Gombert earned his commission after graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.
Sea duty assignments included ordnance officer, fire control officer, and first lieutenant in USS Truxtun (CGN 35), which included two Middle East deployments and one counter-narcotic mission conducted in support of the United States Coast Guard (USCG). He also served as fire control officer and assistant operations officer in USS Russell (DDG 59). During this plank owner tour, he deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Strike.

Department head tours included combat systems officer in USS Halyburton (FFG 40), with a deployment in support of NATO Adriatic Sea operations and Operation Southern Watch in the Arabian Gulf. Following Halyburton he served as combat systems and anti-terrorism/force protection officer in Destroy Squadron (DESRON) THREE ONE during Rim of the Pacific 2000 with a deployment supporting Operation Southern Watch.

Captain Gombert served as USS Crommelin’s (FFG 37) executive officer and deployed in support of USCG counter-narcotic operations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean/Caribbean Sea. During that deployment, Crommelin scored the 3rd highest at-sea drug interdiction in U.S. history while amassing $1.2B dollars worth of confiscated narcotics.

During his most recent sea tour, he commanded USS Gridley (DDG 101) where he led the crew in two deployments, including the ship's maiden voyage. Gridley earned DESRON SEVEN's Battle Efficiency award in 2008.

Shore tours included Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a master’s degree in Middle East, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa Affairs and an MBA in Information Technology Management. Captain Gombert also served two years as program officer at the School of International Graduate Studies in Monterey, then two years at the Pentagon in OPNAV N8F as the Navy's Deputy Shipbuilding (SCN) Manager. This was followed by two years as a strategist for the Secretary of Defense in the Office of the Deputy under Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans, and Forces. In his most recent shore tour, he served as Destroyer Branch Head and then Strategy Branch Head in OPNAV N96.
Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
