Captain Clausen is native of Contra Costa County, California and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. He earned a commission via NROTC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology from Iowa State University in 1987. He later received a Master's of Science Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University.
His first assignment was CIC Officer in USS JACK WILLIAMS (FFG 24) where he completed two deployments to the Arabian Gulf. This was followed by a tour as Combat System Training Team Leader for Fleet Training Unit in Mayport, Florida. Captain Clausen was next assigned as Combat Systems Officer in USS JOHN A MOORE (FFG 19) in southern California from 1993 through 1995. He next served as Commanding Officer of USS SQUALL (PC 7).
In 1998 Captain Clausen attended the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This tour was followed by a one year assignment to the Chief of Naval Operations Staff in the Pentagon where he served in N86 as part of the Theater Air and Missile Defense branch. He then served as Executive Officer in USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57) from 2000 to 2002. Captain Clausen was then selected to serve as Flag Secretary and Executive Assistant for Commander, Naval Surface Force from 2002 to 2004. In his next assignment Captain Clausen served as Commanding Officer of USS CHAFEE (DDG 90). During this tour CHAFEE deployed to the Arabian Gulf. Following his tour in CHAFEE, Captain Clausen attended the Joint Forces Staff College and then joined the staff of Commander Carrier Strike Group SEVEN embarked on USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) where he served as Operations Officer. Captain Clausen was assigned to the Standing Joint Force Headquarters at US Pacific Command from 2009 through July 2011.
Captain Clausen assumed command of USS PRINCETON (CG 59) in November of 2011.
His decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various campaign and service awards.
