Lieutenant Commander Scott Nietzel earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri and subsequently received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit at the University of Missouri.

At sea, he served as the First Lieutenant in USS Lake Erie (CG 70), Assistant Material Officer on the staff of Destroyer Squadron 31 and Fire Control Officer in USS Chosin (CG 65) he again deployed to the Middle East in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was assigned as the commissioning Weapons Officer of USS Dewey (DDG 105) and later served as the ship's Combat Systems Officer. He served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of MCM Crew Leader.

Ashore, Lieutenant Commander Nietzel attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security Affairs, with a regional emphasis in Latin America. Later, he served as the Air and Missile Defense Cell Lead at Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island. Lieutenant Commander Nietzel's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit awards.
