San Diego, CA - Sailors from the guided missile cruiser, USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN, conducted a community relations (COMREL) event at the Malcom X Library in San Diego on 19 February, 2013. The program, Homework Helpers, offers tutoring for children.
The event, sponsored by the Armed Services YMCA, is a weekly activity in which active duty service members may come out to help the community. Culinary Specialist (SW) 3rd Class Francisco Picos, Operational Specialist 2nd Class Jeremy Jones, Logistic Support Seaman Andrew Madrid, Culinary Specialist (SW) 2nd Class Jason Smith, Quartermaster Seaman Donterris Rogers, Quartermaster Seaman Byron Johnson, Gunners Mate (SW) 2nd Class Nicholas Miguel, Seaman Ron Forster, and Lieutenant Michael Kennedy, a Navy chaplain offered their assistance to the community’s children.
When asked what motivates him to come to these events, GM2 Miguel replied, “I do it for the kids because they are the future of our nation, and education is the key to success.” LSSN Madrid stated, “I love the opportunity to give back the help that I received when I was young and needed help from volunteers.”
Mr. Lorenzo Inzuna, of the Armed Services YMCA, has been running the event for over two years after taking it over from Volunteer San Diego. The event runs every Tuesday while children are in school from 1800 until 1930 at the Malcom X Library. Mr. Inzuna’s motivation and enthusiasm to keeping the project continuing makes it possible for these children to get any and all assistance that they require. When asked why he has continued the program Mr. Inzuna said, “I do this to help give back to my community. Having military personnel do the tutoring helps the children with their growth and gives them someone to look up to, as well as giving them a mentor.”
