Command Master Chief (May 2009 - May 2011)
Command Master Chief Flynn was born in Flint, Michigan and was raised in Los Angeles, California. He is a graduate of Fairfax High School, class of 1987. He enlisted in the Navy and attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Center, San Diego, CA.
Following Basic Training, he attended Damage Controlman Class “A” School at NTTC Treasure Island, CA.
His first sea duty assignment was to USS CAPE COD (AD-43) from 1988 to 1993, participating in Operation Desert Storm and disaster relief efforts following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. During this tour, he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation and was advanced to Petty Officer First Class.
He was then assigned to COMATGMIDPAC as a Firefighting, Damage Control and CBR-D instructor from 1993 through 1996, where he qualified to instruct five high risk courses of instruction, was the ATGMIDPAC Instructor of the Year (1994), earned his COMTRAPAC Master Training Specialist designation, and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer.
His follow on assignment was to USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64) as the DC LCPO, where he served from 1996 through 2000, completing Western Pacific Deployments in 1997 and in 1999 in support of Operation Southern Watch and earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist designation.
From June 2000 to December 2003, he was assigned to NMCRC Phoenix, AZ where he served as Training Officer and as Command Chief Petty Officer for the Full Time Support staff and 800 drilling reservists.
Upon completion of shore duty, he received orders to the Forward Deployed Naval Forces onboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) where he was the DC and Repair Division LCPO from 2004 to 2006 and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer.
In September 2006 he volunteered for IA duty and received orders to Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. Assigned to code J5 from Sep 2006 to Feb 2008, he worked forward with host nation Navy’s in Djibouti, Kenya, and Yemen, and was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer with follow on selection into the CMC program.
After returning from IA, Master Chief Flynn received orders to COMNAVREGIONSW ASIA as the Region Equal Opportunity Advisor where he served from 2008 to July 2009.
Command Master Chief Flynn is a graduate of the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy Class 123 (Khaki Group), the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, and Command Leadership School’s CMC/COB Course Class 63. He has a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology-Web Management from University of Phoenix, and a Master of Arts Degree in Computer Resources and Information Systems Management from Webster University.
His Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
