|CAPT Thomas G. Halvorson
Commanding Officer (May 28, 2011 - March 7, 2013)
A native of Willmar, Minnesota, Captain Halvorson graduated from Northwestern University and received his commission through the NROTC program in 1988.
His initial sea assignment was to USS WASP (LHD 1) serving in Communications and Deck departments through the ships Commissioning and maiden deployment to the Mediterranean. He returned to sea as a Department Head serving on USS BOONE (FFG 28) as Operations Officer and deploying with the AMERICA BATTLE GROUP to the Adriatic. He next served as Operations Officer for DESTROYER SQUADRON FOURTEEN deploying with the GEORGE WASHINGTON BATTLE GROUP. He then served as Executive Officer of USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) deploying to the Northern Atlantic. Following that tour, he served as Surface Plans Officer for the THEODORE ROOSEVELT STRIKE GROUP (CCDG-8) deploying during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. His most recent assignment was as Commanding Officer of USS JOHN S. MCCAIN forward deployed to the SEVENTH FLEET.
Ashore, Captain Halvorson served on the Navy Headquarters Staff in the Surface Warfare Division (N86/N76) as the FFG/DD Platform Sponsor, Surface Warfare policy assistant and as the Flag Aide to the Director, Surface Warfare. In 2004-2005 he was a member of the CNO chartered Halsey Research Group conducting fleet operational war-gaming. Most recently in 2010 he completed a tour with the Missile Defense Agency assigned to Aegis BMD as the Joint Maritime Operations and Integration officer and later Chief of Staff.
Captain Halvorson has received a Masters degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Masters degree in National Security and International Affairs from the United States Naval War College.
He has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), and various other individual and unit awards.
