CAPT Sterling W. Dawley
Commanding Officer

Captain Sterling W. Dawley is a native of Syracuse, New York. He was commissioned in 1991 after graduating from the United States Naval Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics.
His first assignment was in USS John Rodgers (DD 983) where he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Navigator. During this tour he made two deployments, one as Flagship during UNITAS, and again as Flagship for SNFL to the Adriatic Sea. In 1995 he reported to the United States Naval Academy as an instructor in the Division of Professional Development, Department of Seamanship and Navigation.
Upon completion of Department Head School in 1998, he reported to the Pre-Commissioning Unit for the USS O’KANE (DDG 77) as Weapons Officer. After O’KANE was commissioned, he fleeted-up to Combat Systems Officer, making her maiden deployment with the CARL VINSON Battle Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Returning to shore duty, he reported to the Naval War College in February of 2002. While there, he received a Masters of Art Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Following War College, he reported to the USS ROSS (DDG 71) in July 2003 as the Executive Officer. While assigned to the ROSS, he deployed to Fifth and Sixth Fleet as part of the GEORGE WASHINGTON Surface Strike Group in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
Completing his tour in ROSS, he reported to DESTROYER SQUADRON TWO SIX in June 2005 as the Chief Staff Officer. While assigned to the squadron, he deployed to the Gulf of Mexico as part of the HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group, providing disaster relief in support of JTF Katrina.
From August 2006 until July 2008, he served on the Joint Staff, J5 Homeland Division. While assigned as a political and military planner, he was responsible for providing analysis, coordination, recommendations and planning on strategic military policy, and positions related to emerging national security issues.
In February of 2009, he took command of the USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) and executed a successful deployment as the only U.S. ship assigned to the United Kingdom, TAURUS 09 Battle Group. Following his command tour, he served as the Executive Assistant to Commander, Surface Forces Atlantic from August 2010 to September 2012. While assigned, he also graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College.
In October 2012, Captain Dawley reported to Commander, Carrier Strike Group TEN as the Future Operations Officer and deployed with the HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Captain Dawley assumed command of the USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) in October of 2014.
