|CAPT Paul J. Schlise
A native of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Captain Schlise graduated from Marquette University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and was commissioned through Marquette’s NROTC program.
At sea, his assignments included Aux/Electrical Officer, 1st & 2nd Division Officer and Navigator in USS FLINT (AE 32), Fire Control Officer in USS ANTIETAM (CG 54), Commissioning Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS HOPPER (DDG 70), Executive Officer, USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) and Commanding Officer, USS HALSEY (DDG 97).
Ashore, he served on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as National Missile Defense Action Officer (OPNAV N765), at Navy Personnel Command, Surface Warfare Officer Distribution Division (PERS 41) as Deputy Director, and with the Joint Staff, Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J5) as Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction Division Chief.
While Executive Officer in JOHN PAUL JONES, the ship was awarded the Spokane Trophy, recognizing the ship’s best-in-Fleet performance in combat systems readiness and warfare operations by Commander, US Pacific Fleet; and the Arizona Memorial Trophy for excellence in strike warfare and surface fire support.
Captain Schlise assumed command of USS HALSEY in February 2007, oversaw replacement of the ship’s Nr. 1 Main Reduction Gear, and deployed to the Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf region as Air Defense Commander for USS PELELIU Expeditionary Strike Group. HALSEY was twice awarded the COMPACFLT Golden Anchor for retention excellence, swept all five Commander, Naval Surface Forces Departmental Excellence awards and the COMNAVSURFOR Self-Sufficient Ship of the Year award in 2008, and received the 2008 Secretary of the Navy Energy Conservation Award, #1 in Small Ship category.
Captain Schlise has completed eight Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployments, participating in Operations DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, SOUTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM, DESERT FOX and TOMODACHI. He holds a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College, Washington, DC.
Captain Schlise assumed responsibilities as Deputy Commander, Destroyer Squadron SEVEN, San Diego, California in April 2011. He fleeted-up to Commodore in October 2012.
His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy Commendation Medal with Silver Star, Navy Achievement Medal with two gold stars and unit and campaign awards.
