CAPT Fred W. Kacher

Captain Fred W. Kacher is a native of Oakton, Virginia and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1990 with an honors degree in English.

Prior to becoming commodore of Destroyer Squadron SEVEN in July 2014, he served as the command's deputy commodore as the command executed its historic shift to Southeast Asia as part of America's Rebalance to the Pacific. Among his previous sea tours, he served on cruisers and destroyers, deploying multiple times as part of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet. Before DESRON 7, he most recently served at sea as commanding officer of USS STOCKDALE (DDG 106), which earned the Battle Efficiency Award in 2010. Prior to assuming command of STOCKDALE, he served as Executive Officer in USS BARRY (DDG 52), during which time the ship was selected for the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy and Captain Kacher was selected for the Admiral Elmo Zumwalt Award for Visionary Leadership after being nominated by members of the ship's crew.

Ashore, Captain Kacher has served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy and as Deputy Executive Assistant and then Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information, Plans, and Strategy (N3/N5). In 2006, he was selected as a White House Fellow where he worked on issues related to homeland security and counterterrorism while serving at the White House. Most recently, he served as Lead Speechwriter and Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Captain Kacher holds various decorations and awards including the Presidential Service Badge and holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School where he also served as Student Body President. He has also received the Arleigh Burke Leadership Award, the Knachel Leadership Award, and the Top Gunner Award at both Department Head and Prospective Commanding Officer's Schools. He is the author of the book, Newly Commissioned Naval Officer's Guide (U.S. Naval Institute Press, 2009).
