Chief Gunner’s Mate Juan Andres Gallegos, of North Miami Beach, Florida, enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1998. After graduating Naval Gunnery “A” School at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois, he was selected to attend MK45 5 Inch 54 Caliber Mod 1 and 2 “C” school at Fleet Combat Training Center, Damn Neck, Virginia.
After completing “C” school Gallegos was stationed onboard USS Spruance (DD-963), in Mayport, Florida, from December 1999 to December 2003. As workcenter supervisor for CG-01 he completed two deployments in support of NATO STANAVFORMED and Operation Enduring Freedom where he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification. In 2003 he transferred to SERMC Mayport, Florida, where he became the LPO of the weapons shop.
Returning to sea in February 2007, Gallegos was stationed onboard USS Farragut (DDG-99) as LCPO of Combat Gunnery Division. Onboard USS Farragut he was deployed in support of UNITAS in South America, and CTF 151 Counter Piracy Operations in the Gulf of Aden. In 2011 he was handpicked to go to COMNAVSURFLANT, Cruiser/Destroyer Readiness Detachment Mayport to be the lead weapons assessor for all Pre INSURV Assessments in the Mayport basin. While at COMNAVSURFLANT he conducted weapons assessments on 12 ships, ensuring that each ship successfully completed their INSURV inspection.
Gallegos reported to Commander, Destroyer Squadron 7 in May 2014 as the Ordnance Officer and Assistant Force Protection Officer. His duties include travelling in support of CARAT exercises where he plans and executes force protection measures for participating ships and personnel. He assumed the duties as Senior Enlisted Leader in February, 2016. His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), and a variety of unit, campaign, and personal awards.
