Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Gerring is originally from Aberdeen, Maryland. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1996 as a Fire Controlman and was commissioned through the NROTC program at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Geography from Georgia State University.
Following commissioning, Gerring served at sea as the Electronics Warfare Officer, Combat Information Center Officer and Assistant Operations Officer on board USS BOONE (FFG 28) in 2004. In 2012, he served as the Combat Systems Officer in USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) prior to being assigned as the Combat Systems Officer at DESTROYER SQUADRON SEVEN.
Ashore, Gerring was assigned as an Instructor of Naval Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006. During this tour, he completed his Master’s Degree at UNC in Russian and East European Studies. After redesignation as a Full Time Support Officer, Gerring was assigned as the Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center, Billings, Montana.
As an enlisted sailor, Gerring attended Basic Training and Fire Controlman “A” school in Great Lakes, Illinois, and follow-on training as a MK-23 Target Acquisition System technician in Damneck, Virginia. During his first sea tour, Gerring was stationed in USS RAINIER (AOE 7), deploying as part of the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) Strike Group in support of Operation DESERT FOX. During this tour he was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class, earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin, and was selected for the NROTC program.
Gerring has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various other unit and campaign decorations.
