Senior Chief Petty Officer Combs is a native of Houston, Texas. At the age of five his family moved to Denver, Colorado where he lived until he enlisted in the Army, 23 January 1993 and went to Boot Camp in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
After completion of Boot Camp and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) he was stationed on Fort Jackson, South Carolina with the 1st/28th Infantry Regiment as a Unit Level Armorer, and was advanced to the rank of Specialist. In July 1996 he transferred to Okinawa, Japan. While serving his country on Okinawa and was advanced to the rank of Sergeant and completed a Supply Sergeant and Unit Level Armorer tour until his Honorable Discharge in October 1999. On 5 January 2000 Senior Chief enlisted in the Navy as a Seaman Recruit and completed Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois being meritoriously advanced to Seaman. From April 2000 to March 2001 he completed SONAR Technician “A” and “C” schools were he was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class. His first ship was the USS George Philip (FFG 12) home ported in San Diego, California where he served as Maintenance Person. He was advanced to Second Class Petty Officer and decommissioned the USS George Philip is April 2003 before being transferred to the USS Stephen W. Groves (FFG 29) in Pascagoula, Mississippi from April 2003 to May 2005. In Mississippi he was advanced to First Class Petty Officer where he served as Work Center Supervisor and Leading Petty Officer. After completing is first sea tour, he received training as a 2M Technician and headed to his shore command; Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center where he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer, led Navy Military Training, served as Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Active SONAR Office and a AN/SQS-56 Maintenance Instructor. After completion of his first shore command in September 2008 he headed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to the USS O’KANE (DDG 77). There he served as Weapons Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, CA Division Leading Chief Petty Officer, and advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer.
Among his personal awards are the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Good Conduct Medal (6th Award) and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
