Captain Dave Welch is a native of Peoria Illinois. He graduated and received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in May 1987. He was designated a Surface Warfare Officer in August 1988.
His initial sea tour was aboard USS NASSAU (LHA 4), where he served as Second Division Officer and Main Propulsion Division Officer. Next he served as Navigator in USS TICONDEROGA (CG47), then as Flag Lieutenant and Aide to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group EIGHT/Commander, SARATOGA Strike Group. In October 1995 he reported to USS ANZIO (CG 68), and served 35 months as Engineer Officer. From August 2000 to November 2001 he served as Executive Officer in USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70).
He commanded USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93) from 1 September 2005 to 18 April 2007.
Ashore, he served as Advanced Tactical Data Links Requirements Officer and Combat Identification Action Officer in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N62), Arlington, Virginia from October 1998 to February 2000. He also completed an assignment as Placement Officer and Surface Commander Detailer at the Navy Personnel Command (PERS 41) in Millington, Tennessee from November 2001 to November 2004. His most recent shore tour was as Deputy Resources and Assessment Directorate (J80) at United States Pacific Command, Honolulu, Hawai’i.
Captain Welch reported to Destroyer Squadron THREE ONE in November 2009, and served as Deputy Commodore. He assumed command of the squadron on 21 January 2011.
He holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in English from the Naval Academy and a Masters of Arts degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California.
His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various campaign and unit awards.
