SAN DIEGO – Commander, Destroyer Squadron Twenty One (COMDESRON 21) held a change of command ceremony at Pier 2, Naval Base San Diego on Sep 6. Capt. John Beaver turned over command of DESRON 21 to Capt. Brian Shipman.
Vice Adm. Thomas Copeman, currently serving as Commander U.S. Naval Surface Forces Pacific Fleet, was the principal speaker.
The ceremony marked the end of a busy 29 month tour for Beaver, which included the deployment of all five of the Squadron's ships and two extended combat deployments totaling over 19 months at sea for the Staff. While performing duties as the Sea Combat Commander in the John C. Stennis Strike Group, the Staff planned and executed tactical maritime security actions with naval, joint, and coalition forces in the 5th, and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility in support of two named operations; New Dawn, and Enduring Freedom.

As Commodore, Capt. Beaver served as the “immediate superior in command” for five Aegis guided missile destroyers: USS Milius (DDG 69), USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Kidd (DDG 100), USS Dewey (DDG 105), and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108).
Capt. Beaver’s follow on orders include temporary assignment to Commander Naval Surface Forces Pacific in San Diego and professional development at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk.
Capt. Brian Shipman, incoming Commodore, is a 1989 graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and was commissioned through the Naval ROTC program. He completed sea tours aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Chosin (CG 65), and USS Milius (DDG 69), and then to Commander THIRD FLEET in the J7 Training and Readiness directorate. From 2002-2004, Capt. Shipman served as Executive Officer in USS Howard (DDG 83) and he commanded USS Decatur (DDG 73). Following his command tour, Shipman reported to Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense in Dahlgren, Virginia, initially assigned as Director, Joint Maritime Operations and then as Chief of Staff. He reported to DESRON 21 in May 2012.
“From its beginning during the Solomon Islands campaign during World War II, DESRON 21 has a rich history. I am honored and humbled to be part of the tradition,” said Capt. Shipman.
DESRON 21 is part of Carrier Strike Group 3 and is scheduled to embark John C. Stennis Strike Group for their next deployment.
