HISTORY OF DESTROYER SQUADRON ONE

CDS 1 Logoback of coinThe first Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1 was present at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and subsequently saw action in various World War II battles including Rabaul, Coral Sea, Savo Island, as well as the Aleutian, Gilbert and Marshall Islands. The squadron also participated in the Korean War and, later, the Taiwan Strait Patrols.

Today's DESRON 1 evolved from Reserve Destroyer Squadron 27, established on January 13, 1958, which was subsequently redesignated Destroyer Squadron 27 in 1970, Surface Squadron 1 in 1980 and finally Destroyer Squadron 1 in October 1993. Destroyer Squadron 1 is assigned to Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and is comprised of five Oliver Hazard Perry Class guided-missile frigates.

In addition to operations in the 3rd Fleet, squadron ships have deployed with battle groups to the Persian Gulf as part of the 5th Fleet, to the Western Pacific as part of the 7th Fleet and regularly support counterdrug operations in South America and the Caribbean Sea as well as other fleet commitments.

Commander, DESRON 1 was assigned as the Task Group Commander of the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) WESTPAC deployments to Southeast Asia from 2002-2007. CARAT is a rolling series of bilateral exercises conducted with the navies of the Republic of the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. The primary mission of these deployments is to enhance cooperative engagement and naval interoperability with the participating Southeast Asian countries.
