Captain John Steinberger was born in Mountainview, California. He was commissioned through the Naval ROTC program, graduating from Illinois Institute of Technology.

His sea tours include: Boilers Officer and Navigation Officer, USS SAMPSON (DDG 10) in Mayport, FL; Operations Officer, USS CARR (FFG 52) in Charleston, SC; Operations Officer, USS CHOSIN (CG 65) in Pearl Harbor, HI; Air Defense/Surface Strike Officer in COMCARGRU Three embarked on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in Bremerton, WA; Flag Secretary in COMCRUDESGRU One embarked on USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) in San Diego, CA; Executive Officer, USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) in San Diego, CA; Commanding Officer, USS DECATUR (DDG 73) in San Diego, CA; and N3/ACOS for Operations in COMCARSTRKGRU One embarked on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in San Diego, CA.

His shore tours include: Student, Naval Post Graduate School , Monterey CA (Financial Management); Student, Naval War College, Newport RI (College of Naval Command and Staff); Surface Strike Section Head and Tomahawk Action Officer in the Surface Warfare directorate (N86) of OPNAV; Deputy Chief, Command and Control Division and BMD Officer in the USPACOM J3 directorate.

His personal awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign, unit, and service awards.

Navy Establishes Carrier Strike Group 1
The Navy formally established Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1 in San Diego October 1, 2009. The flagship for CSG 1 will be the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), currently homeported in Newport News, Va. Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1, USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) will round out the strike group.

PACIFIC OCEAN (Sept. 1, 2010) The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) performs tactical maneuvering exercises with the guided-missile frigates USS Rentz (FFG 46) and USS McCluskey (FFG 41); the guided-missile destroyers USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS Gridley (DDG 101); and the guided-missile cruisers USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) and USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). Carl Vinson and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 are underway conducting local operations off the coast of Southern California
