Commander Dennis Velez is a native of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. He was commissioned an Ensign 1992 after graduating from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering.
At sea, Commander Velez served as Pre-Commissioning Gunnery Officer, Auxiliaries Officer and First Lieutenant aboard the USS STOUT (DDG 55), Operations Officer aboard the USS CARR (FFG 52), and Operations Officer/Air Defense Officer aboard USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64). He has also served as Joint Training Officer and Military Assistant to the Deputy Commander with Commander Second Fleet/Striking Fleet Atlantic permanently embarked aboard USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20). His Executive Officer Tour was aboard USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75). His most recent at sea assignment was as Commanding Officer of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62), assigned to Destroyer Squadron Fifteen and forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. Commander Velez has operational experience in the Atlantic, Pacific, Middle East, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Southwest Asia theaters.
Ashore, Commander Velez served as Officer in Charge of Western Hemisphere Group Caribbean Area Coordinator in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, where he provided logistical support to all Naval forces operating in the Caribbean and Latin America. After completing his Executive Officer assignment, he served as Surface Placement Branch Head and Deputy Director for Surface Warfare Distribution for the Naval Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee.
Commander Velez has also earned a Masters in Science in Information Technology Management.
His personal military decorations include the Meritorious Service, the Navy Commendation, and the Navy Achievement Medals. CDR Velez is most proud of his appointment as an Honorary Chief Petty Officer by USS DONALD COOK’s Command Master Chief, CMDCM Steve Fontenot, in February 2007.
