|CAPT John M. Clausen
Chief of Staff
Captain Clausen is native of Contra Costa County, California and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. He was commissioned via NROTC at Iowa State University in 1987. He earned a Master's of Science Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University.
His first assignment was CIC Officer in USS JACK WILLIAMS (FFG 24) where he completed two deployments to the Arabian Gulf. This was followed by a tour as Combat System Training Team Leader for Fleet Training Unit in Mayport, Florida. Captain Clausen was next assigned as Combat Systems Officer in USS JOHN A MOORE (FFG 19) in southern California from 1993 through 1995. He then commanded USS SQUALL (PC 7) from 1995 until early 1998.
In 1998 Captain Clausen attended the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was subsequently assigned to the Chief of Naval Operations where he served in N86 as part of the Theater Air and Missile Defense branch. He then returned to sea duty and served as Executive Officer in USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57) from 2000 to 2002. His next assignment was as Flag Secretary and Executive Assistant for Commander, Naval Surface Force from 2002 to 2004. Captain Clausen then commanded USS CHAFEE (DDG 90). Following his tour in CHAFEE joined the staff of Commander Carrier Strike Group SEVEN embarked on USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) where he served as Operations Officer. Captain Clausen then joined the Standing Joint Force Headquarters at US Pacific Command from 2009 through July 2011. Captain Clausen commanded USS PRINCETON (CG 59) from November 2011 through August of 2013. He then served as Chief of Staff for Naval Mine Warfare and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (NMAWC) until April of 2015.
His decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various campaign and service awards.
