Commander Chris Nelson was raised in Corvallis, Oregon and he is a 1994 graduate of the University of Colorado, where he earned a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy through the NROTC program. Commander Nelson received his Master of Science degree in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado in 2001.
Commander Nelson’s first sea tour was aboard USS MERRILL (DD-976), home-ported in San Diego, California, where he served as Auxiliaries Officer followed by a tour as Fire Control Officer aboard USS BOXER (LHD-4). During his initial sea tours, he completed three deployments to the Western Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf with the CONSTELLATION and ABRAHAM LINCOLN Battle Groups as well as the BOXER Amphibious Ready Group.
Commander Nelson’s third sea tour was aboard USS CARTER HALL (LSD-50), where he served as Chief Engineer and completed his fourth deployment to the Arabian Gulf. Following his tour in CARTER HALL, CDR Nelson served as Material and Readiness Officer for Amphibious Squadron FOUR, participating in operations with both WASP and IWO JIMA Expeditionary Strike Groups.
CDR Nelson completed his fifth sea tour aboard the Dock Landing Ship USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47), where he served as Executive Officer. While serving in RUSHMORE, Commander Nelson completed workups and a deployment to the Arabian Gulf with Amphibious Squadron SEVEN and other units of the BONHOMME RICHARD Amphibious Ready Group.
CDR Nelson’s shore tours include service as an Instructor of Naval Science at the University of Colorado as well as Maritime Operations Officer for Marine Corps Forces Europe in Stuttgart, Germany.
CDR Nelson’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, multiple Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and various other awards.
Command Nelson reported to Beachmaster Unit ONE as Executive Officer in January 2011.
