Commander Jeff Oakey is a native of suburban Chicago, Illinois. He received his commission via the NROTC program at the University of
Notre Dame, where he graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Government in 1992. He received a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the Marine Corps University in 2009.
Commander Oakey served afloat in USS STEPHEN W. GROVES (FFG 29), as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, Auxiliaries/Electrical Officer, and Navigator; in USS BOXER (LHD 4), as Second Division Officer; in USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43), in Sasebo, Japan as Operations Officer; in USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6), as First Lieutenant; in USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19) as the commissioning Executive Officer; and briefly on the Seventh Fleet staff. He served as Commanding Officer of USS NEW ORLEANS from October 2009 – June 2011, while the ship deployed to the Southern Pacific Ocean and worked with armed forces of 12 nations. He assumed command of ATG WESTPAC in December 2011.
Commander Oakey’s tours ashore include Plans/Operations Officer in 598th U.S. Army Transportation Group in the Netherlands; Analyst and Action Officer on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff (N70); and as a student at the U.S. Marine Corps War College, in Quantico, Virginia.
