ATG Pacific Northwest Enhances Anti-Terrorism Readiness With FATS

EVERETT, Wash. – Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest (ATGPNW) Anti-terrorism (AT) Training Team is conducting annual small arms sustainment training utilizing a Fire Arms Training Simulator (FATS) April 25, 2017 through April 27, 2017. Small arms and crew-served weapon qualification is an essential skill set for ships' anti-terrorism force protection. Acquiring these qualifications require repetitive training by the crew. ATGPNW Anti-terrorism Department utilizes FATS providing a low cost, safe alternative towards the sustainment of live fire qualification. FATS also allows leaders to train beyond specific marksmanship standards and continue improvement for all skill levels.

ATGPNW Anti-Terrorism Department conducts training and assessment during ships' in-port periods in order to ensure standards for readiness. Semi-annual sustainment training includes marksmanship, safety and weapon familiarization training. ATGPNW small-arms instructors use a crawl, walk and run approach to training ensuring trainees receive the best training essential for ships’ anti-terrorism certification.

Anti-terrorism inspections also include assessment of ships' security force knowledge, armed sentry duties, shipboard security engagement with weapons, visit board search and seizure, force protection fundamentals, active shooter scenarios, non-lethal weapons, swimmer attack and high speed target intercept. Additionally, instructors observe and evaluate students’ performance to the same standard as all live-fire events to give an overall grade for the ship's anti-terrorism readiness.

ATGPNW will offer FATS for .50 Cal machine gun sustainment training beginning in October. The simulator is available Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. for M-9, M-16, and M-240B {REPEAT DATE FROM FIRST PARAGRAPH}. To schedule training dates please contact EVRT-ATGPNW-N80@NAVY.MIL ATGPACNORWEST.
