|Commander Les Cardenas
Executive Officer (June 2010 - June 2012)
CDR Cardenas was born in Houston, Texas, received his commission through the Texas A&M NROTC program in 1989, and was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. His initial duty assignment was as Deck Division Officer, and subsequently Assistant Engineer in USS SAN BERNARDINO (LST 1189) forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. While there, he completed deployments to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM.
From August 1993 to October 1995, he attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and earned a Masters of Science Degree in Systems Engineering, specializing in electronics and Electronic Warfare. He is the recipient of the CNO’s Electronic Warfare Award for academic excellence.
Following Department Head School, CDR Cardenas served as Engineer Officer in USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6) from 1996 to 1998, and in USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) from 1998 to 2000. On completion of initial Department Head tours, he served as Navigator in USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) from 2000 to 2002.
CDR Cardenas reported to USS TORTUGA (LSD 46) as Executive Officer in 2002. His tour included a nine month deployment to Fifth Fleet in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his XO tour, he served as Operations Officer in USS NASSAU (LHA 4) until October of 2005.
CDR Cardenas served as Director of Current Operations for Military Sealift Command Head Quarters in Washington, D.C., from November 2005 to July 2008. He is currently assigned as Executive Officer for Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, in Pearl Harbor, HI.
Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
