Fall 2014 NROTC Ship Selection
Midshipmen and Officer Candidates find out their order of merit among their peers and get a call from a detailer at NPC to select the name of the first ship they will serve on in the U.S. Navy. This live web-based event is coordinated through NPC and each of the NROTC units to make a fun and interactive ship selection process that resembles USNA ship selection as closely as possible.
Standing Up America
USS America will be the first ship of its class, replacing the Tarawa-class of amphibious assault ships. The ship was christened Oct. 20, 2012, is being constructed in Pascagoula, Miss., and is scheduled to be commissioned late 2014 in San Francisco.
The commissioning ceremony is the final event which brings a ship to life and marks the entrance of a man-of-war into the naval forces of her nation.
The George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GWCSG) includes Commander, Carrier Strike Group Five (CSG 5), Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW 5) and Commander Destroyer Squadron 15 (CDS 15). Ships within GWCSG included Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Preble (DDG 88), USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54), USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and USS Stethem (DDG 63), and the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 53).
