SAN DIEGO – Nine Sailors from precommissioning unit (PCU) Stockdale (DDG 106) volunteered at the San Diego Food Bank July 15 to help pack donated food to be distributed throughout San Diego County.
The unit wanted to reach out and build a strong relationship with the local community where the ship will be homeported once it is commissioned in 2009.
“This community service event provides us the opportunity to meet San Diegans,” said Culinary Specialist Seaman Kelly Keogh. “It lets us be a part of the community and helps us achieve a sense of membership.”
Stockdale Sailors chose to do community service at the San Diego Food Bank because the organization provides more than 585,000 meals to residents of San Diego County every month through volunteers willing to provide their time to help the eight person warehouse staff.
“We truly appreciate all the hard work. Their generosity means so much to hungry families and individuals in our community,” said Kathy Dunn, the San Diego Food Bank Volunteer Coordinator.
Stockdale is currently being built in Bath, Maine, and is scheduled to be homeported in San Diego upon commissioning.
