Sterett Officers Choose Surface Navy Careers

By USS Sterett Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO - Five surface warfare officers (SWO) onboard USS Sterett (DDG 104) chose to continue their careers by signing the SWO Continuation Pay (SWOCP) and SWO Critical Retention Bonus (SWO CSRB) for a combined total of $75,000.

Lt. James DeWitt, Lt.j.g. Patrick Moore, Lt.j.g. Aron Rotklein, Lt.j.g. Kristen Sylva and Lt.j.g Christina Linehan committed to an additional three years of sea duty as department heads in the Surface Navy community following completion of their shore duty billets.

Their reasons for deciding to continue their Navy careers vary, but the common themes that weighed heavily on their decision include the camaraderie amongst peers onboard, mentorship from Sterett's wardroom leadership, and a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction unrivaled by many of the alternative job choices offered in the current civilian job market.

"I couldn't have made a better decision given the state of the economy and the needs of my family," said Rotklein. "The experience and leadership skills that I have gained in the Navy are second to none."

"These junior officers performed exceptionally well during their first two sea tours as division officers and displayed the essential leadership skills and attributes to take their careers to the next level as department heads on various warships throughout the Fleet," said Commanding Officer of Sterett, Cmdr. Brian P. Eckerle. "I am extremely confident these motivated, highly-skilled individuals will ensure our Navy remains a relevant global force that can fight and win when called upon to do so."
