SAN DIEGO – USS Sampson (DDG 102) hosted a ship’s tour for Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell Jan. 10, showing the Mixed Martial Arts athlete how the Navy fights.
Sampson, a guided missile destroyer, provides multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.

While aboard, Liddell visited key locations including the flight deck, forecastle, bridge, combat information center, central control station, and berthing. Crew members working in each location described their work environment and daily operations.  Liddell, who debuted as an Ultimate Fighting Championship victor in 1998 and is well known and respected for his two-year reign as the UFC light heavyweight champion, completed the tour in Sampson’s mess deck, where Sailors waited to meet the fighting legend. He mingled with the crew and graciously signed autograph after autograph.

“Chuck Liddell is an amazing athlete,” said Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Joshua Frick commented. “We were so proud to have him come onboard. I am grateful that he took a break from his busy schedule to spend some time with us.”   Sampson is attached to Destroyer Squadron 23 and homeported in San Diego.
