SAN DIEGO – The Naval Officers’ Spouses’ Club (NOSC) of San Diego awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships and grants during a reception on Naval Air Station, North Island, May 19.
Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Vice Adm. Tom Copeman, presented the scholarships on behalf of NOSC.
“The presentations awarded today represent the culmination of a year-long volunteer effort. The Spouses' Club volunteered more than 5,000 hours at the Sand Dollar shops and various other fundraising events to ensure they could add to the support that community organizations continuously provide to our fleet each year,” said Copeman as he addressed NOSC. “The ways San Diego and local organizations engage is impressive and on behalf of our Sailors and Marines, thank you for all you do.”
The club awarded $31,500 in educational scholarships to 15 local high school students and one military spouse; the Cathy Marie Yakeley Memorial Scholarship to one military spouse; and $31,500 to 22 local charities that support the local military community.
“Our organization raises funds throughout the year through its two Sand Dollar boutiques, staffed entirely by volunteers, and events such as the annual Welcome Social Auction in September and a booth at the Coronado Flower Show,” said NOSC member and spokeswoman, Susan Lebron. "San Diego military families are very fortunate to have such a great support system from the community and we really appreciate the businesses that come together to support our Sailors and Marines.”
The 2013 high school recipients are: Benjamin Anderson-Parks, Ramona High; Sarah Berg , Westview High; Michael Cox, Coronado High; Lindsay Garner, Coronado High; Ryanne Giorgione, Coronado High; Ryan Halvorson, Coronado High; David Hesslink, West Hills High; Maude Hoffman, Coronado High; Corinne Lennard, Coronado High; Rachel Loeffler, Coronado High; Adam Nickerl, Carlsbad High; Jared Nickerl, Carlsbad High; Kelly Roberts, Coronado High; Nicholas Vitha, St. Augustine High; and Camille Wilson, Coronado High.
The 2013 recipient of the Cathy Marie Yakeley Memorial Scholarship and military spouse scholarship recipient is Angela Nickerl. The scholarship was founded in honor of an active NOSC military spouse who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1988. Each year, a spouse is provided a scholarship in her memory.
“I feel incredibly grateful to have received these scholarships,” said Nickerl. “As a mother going to school at the same time as three of my children, it can be financially difficult. Being able to apply for and awarded a scholarship through NOSC is very helpful and I truly appreciate it.”
NOSC is a non-profit organization focused on providing enrichment and mentoring for military spouses in San Diego through planned social and fellowship events. They also provide philanthropic support through annual donations to local charities and college scholarships for military families with funding from the Sand Dollar shops.
